Osteopathic & Sports Medicine

Osteopathic medicine is a distinctive form of medical care that is founded on the philosophy that all of our body systems are interrelated and dependent upon one another for good health. This philosophy was developed in 1874 by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, who pioneered the concept of “Wellness” and recognized the importance of treating illness within the context of the whole body or whole person. Osteopathic physicians use all of the tools available through modern medicine including prescription medicine and surgery. They are trained as complete physicians in all the latest medical and surgical techniques with an emphasis on holistic care. Their training includes specialized training in osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) which allows them the ability to do spinal adjustments to treat a variety medical problems. They incorporate osteopathic manipulative medicine into their regimen of patient care when appropriate. Osteopathic manipulative medicine is a set of manual medicine techniques that may be used to diagnose illness and injury, relieve pain, restore range of motion, and enhance the body’s inherent capacity to heal. (1) This is one additional tool in the osteopathic physician’s armamentarium of medical treatments to be able to provide additional care for medical, spinal, and musculoskeletal problems.
Physicians licensed as Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO’s), like their allopathic counterparts (MD’s), must pass national and state medical board examinations in order to obtain a license to practice medicine. There are about 50,000 Osteopathic physicians who provide comprehensive medical care to patients in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. (1)

Sports Medicine:

Sports medicine is the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of health related medical problems associated with sports and physical activity. We live in a very active community where physical activity is important in the prevention of most of the serious health conditions found in our society. With an increased emphasis on physical activity, the medical field has developed an area of medicine to deal with these medical conditions called Sports Medicine. Our Medical Providers provide Comprehensive Sports Medicine Care by providing patients with pre-participation sports physicals to screen for any medical problems that could place an athlete at risk while playing or participating in their sport. We care and treat sports related medical problems including but not limited to: exercise induced asthma, the female sports triad, prevention and care of sports related injuries, musculoskeletal injuries, sprains, stains, fractures, skin problems, pain, overuse injuries, hernias, nutrition, training, and exercise advice.
